About Hlanganisa Community Fund
Hlanganisa Community Fund is an intermediary grant maker supporting community level initiatives through grassroot structures such as community-based organisations, social justice movements, interest groups among others. Hlanganisa’ s vision is for a just and equitable world that values community-led solutions and is free of violence and discrimination. Our mission is to support women’s rights centred, impactful, community-led programmes to build resilient, sustainable communities who use their agency and role to advance good governance and social justice.
About the Closed Call for Proposals
Hlanganisa is pleased to announce a closed call for proposals. Applicants ( current and previous grantee partners) are invited to apply for ONE of the following grants:
1. Capacity Enhancement Grant: R15 000
- Hlanganisa is committed to supporting ad hoc capacity enhancement initiatives for past grantee partners. The purpose of these grants is to fortify organizations' capabilities to effectively execute their programmes, aligning with Hlanganisa's capacity enhancement objectives. Applicants can request support to get a specialist to assist with their institutional and programmatic support.
2. Infrastructure Support Grant: R10 000
- This funding aims to empower organizations to acquire essential infrastructure, thereby advancing their impactful work. The infrastructure funded includes office and ICT infrastructure that is required for the day-to-day operation of the organisation.
3. Research Grants: R30 000
- Our goal for this grant is to support community research to help grassroots organisations to understand their communities better and to tailor their programming approaches effectively.
Eligibility Criteria
To be eligible for this closed call, organizations must meet the following criteria:
- Previous grantee partners of Hlanganisa who received funding within the last three years between 01 June 2021 – 01 July 2024.
- In good standing and compliant with the terms and conditions outlined in previous grant agreements.
- Have a satisfactory record of performance.
- Have a satisfactory record of integrity and business ethics.
- Alignment of proposed activity with Hlanganisa's overarching mission.
Hlanganisa will not support:
- Bursaries
- Loans and seed funding
- Penalties, fines and bad debts
- Individual entrepreneurs and enterprises
Proposal Submission Guidelines
The application process has the following 5 steps:
- Eligibility Determination: Those interested in applying for the Special Purpose Grants under this closed call should express their interest by completing the eligibility screening by way of self-assessing. This mandatory eligibility screening will enable Hlanganisa to ensure that only current and previous grantee partners that meet the eligibility requirements spend the time to apply for a grant. Applicants that do not fill out the eligibility screening will not be considered to apply for the special purpose grant.
- Invitation to Apply: Applicants that complete the eligibility screening and are found eligible will be notified by Hlanganisa. If confirmed, you will receive access to the application form where you can submit a proposal with a budget. Only applicants that complete the eligibility screening and receive the application form from Hlanganisa will be considered for the closed call. If the applicant is not eligible to proceed with the application will be notified and they will not be able to proceed with their application.
- Application Process: Applicants that move past the screening phase will be invited to apply for the grant by way of submitting a proposal. Your application will go through the standard application process and adjudicated for the applications and award the successful applicants a grant.
- Application Assessment: Proposals will then be assessed by the review committee. They will assess the proposal for eligibility, completeness, and relevance to this closed call for proposals (as described in the call for proposals).
- Grant Award: The successful organizations will be awarded a grant after the eligibility screening and application assessment has been finalized.

Application Process:
- All applicants should read and understand the application submission guidelines.
- Applicants complete self-assessment of the eligibility criteria by 18:00 on 11 November 2024.
- Organizations that meet the eligibility criteria will be invited to submit a funding application by 18h00 on 13 November 2024.
- Submit a proposal on the Grant Management System of not more than 2 pages with workplan and the budget in line with the grant category that you are applying funding under. The application should clearly describe the special purpose request for support and provide a rationale aligned with the proposed budget allocation.
- All eligible applications must be submitted electronically by the submission deadline of 23:59 on 20 November 2024. No late applications will be accepted.
Review and Selection Process:
- A thorough review of all proposals will be conducted by the Hlanganisa Grant Review Committee.
- Emphasis will be placed on the alignment of proposed projects with Hlanganisa's mission, demonstrated impact, and organizational needs and capacity.
- All applicants will be notified of the outcomes of their application for the special purpose grant.
If selected to receive funding, Hlanganisa will work with the grantee partner to determine the optimal funding mechanism based on the set of activities as well as the grant category that they applied under.
Grant activities are expected to be for a period of 3 – 12 months depending on the request for funding.
Hlanganisa anticipates awarding multiple grants under this closed call for proposals in each grant category with an aggregate value of up to R250,000.00 for the year 2024. The final grant amounts will be determined by Hlanganisa Grantee Selection Committee based on an agreed upon set of criteria.
